I did not arrive at this work through a polished life. I arrived through rupture—and through the long, unspectacular work of becoming someone I could trust.
My history includes childhood sexual abuse, chronic illness, narcissistic abuse, marriages and divorces, parental alienation from my children, and painful experiences of sabotage within my family. I know what it is to hold myself back while believing I was trying to heal. I know the pull of toxic dynamics from the core: the psychic place that can become more loyal to an identity wound than to potential—or even to reality.
Witnessing a suicide became a dividing line in my life. The structures I had used to survive could no longer carry me. Eventually, I had to unplug. I lived alone. I stopped organizing my existence around fixing myself and fixing other people.
I went on what became a vision quest through Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Turkey, and Hawaii. In Jamaica especially, nature became more than scenery; it became instruction. Distance gave me enough silence to recognize how much of my identity had been built inside other people’s systems.
I finally conceded that my growth would not come from another obsessive human repair project. It would come from loosening the ego’s grip, surrendering to Earth and her elements, and restoring my relationship with the cosmos. Not becoming less alive—becoming less governed by the compulsions that kept pulling me away from life.
My authority is not that nothing happened to me. It is that I learned to stop making what happened the organizing intelligence of my life.
